In January, Taiwan successfully concluded presidential and parliamentary elections, resulting in the third peaceful transfer of power and the ascendance of the first female president in all the Chinese-speaking world.  In November, the United States will hold a general election.  These changes impact U.S.-Taiwan-China relations and America’s policies toward the region, as democracy, commerce, and geopolitics are on the line.  2016 also witnesses major events like Congress’ vote on the Transpacific Partnership (TPP), creation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), progress on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), debut of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and tensions in the South China Sea. The potential positive roles that Taiwan can play on the South China Sea, regional economy, and the international community at large deserve more attention.  TBAA teams up with Pepperdine University in offering this symposium to increase public awareness of these important issues.
